Nach Markteinführung des Porsche 911 im Jahre 1963 sollte dem Coupe schnell ein Cabriolet folgen. Durch die strengen Sicherheitsvorschriften in den USA mussten die Porsche Ingenieure allerdings kreativ werden.
Ein feststehender Überrollbügel, verkleidet mit Edelstahl war die Lösung.
Geboren war der Porsche 911 Targa – das Sicherheitscabriolet.
Presse-Chef Huschke von Hanstein ließ die Journalisten damals wissen: „Der Targa ist weder ein Cabriolet noch ein Coupé, weder ein Hardtop noch eine Limousine, sondern etwas völlig Neues.“
Er begründete eine Dynastie und ein absolutes Alleinstellungsmerkmal der Stuttgarter. Das Patent wurde von Porsche 1965 beantragt. Der Begriff ist bis heute markenrechtlich geschützt und der Targa wird aktuell in seiner 8. Generation gebaut.
Die frühen Targas hatten allerdings keine Glas- sondern eine flexible Kunsstoffscheibe die sich komplett öffnen ließ. Diese Fahrzeuge sind heute gesuchte Raritäten und wurden nur in geringer Stückzahl gebaut.
Für das Modelljahr 1969 entwickelte Porsche modernere Motoren mit Bosch-Einspritzanlage. Die Leistung des Topmodells „S“ stieg auf 170 PS.
Da die feststehende Glasscheibe schon seit 1968 lieferbar war, entschieden sich zu dieser Zeit nur noch sehr wenige Käufer für das Soft-Window. Ab 1970 stellte Porsche die Faltscheiben gänzlich ein.
Somit ist der 2.0 S Targa mit 170 PS die höchstmotorisierte Version dieser speziellen Karosserieform.
Nur eine Handvoll Fahrzeug sind weltweit bekannt. Porsche Experten gehen von unter 30 jemals produzierten Fahrzeugen aus, manche Quellen von lediglich 9.
Unser Wagen hat noch seine Matching Numbers Maschine und ist in der Porsche-Hausfarbe „Irischgrün“ zur Welt gekommen.
In den letzten Jahren wurde das Fahrzeug vollständig und sehr aufwändig restauriert.

After the market launch of the Porsche 911 in 1963, the Coupe was quickly followed by a Cabriolet. However, due to the strict safety regulations in the USA, the Porsche engineers had to get creative.
A fixed roll bar clad in stainless steel was the solution.
The Porsche 911 Targa was born - the safety cabriolet.
Press chief Huschke von Hanstein told journalists at the time: ‘The Targa is neither a convertible nor a coupé, neither a hardtop nor a saloon, but something completely new.’
It established a dynasty and an absolutely unique selling point for the Stuttgart-based company. Porsche applied for the patent in 1965. The term is still protected under trademark law today and the Targa is currently being built in its 8th generation.
However, the early Targas did not have a glass windscreen but a flexible plastic windscreen that could be opened completely. These vehicles are sought-after rarities today and were only built in small numbers.
For the 1969 model year, Porsche developed more modern engines with a Bosch injection system. The output of the top model ‘S’ increased to 170 hp.
As the fixed glass windscreen had been available since 1968, very few buyers opted for the soft windscreen at that time. From 1970, Porsche discontinued the folding windscreen altogether.
The 2.0 S Targa with 170 hp is therefore the most powerful version of this special body shape.
Only a handful of vehicles are known worldwide. Porsche experts estimate that fewer than 30 vehicles were ever produced, while some sources estimate just 9.
Our car still has its matching numbers engine and was born in the Porsche house colour ‘Irish Green’.
In recent years, the vehicle has been completely and extensively restored.
